Nell Dunne: Ellis Island, 1904

Author: Kathleen Duey
Average review score:

great
A great American Diarie book. Although at times it got a little boring, the book was exciting at times. I never really knew what the test were like when people came in to America but this book tells you. Nell is scared the Granny rose won't pass the tests. if she doesn't, then Nell will have to go back to Ireland and may never see her father. A good book.

An excellant addition to the series.
Nell Dunne is scared. She and her mother, baby sister, older brother, and grandmother have endured the long journey from Ireland to the United States to be reuinted with her father after two long years. But before they can rejoin him, they will have to go through Ellis Island. Nell is worried that her grandmother, who is weak and forgetfull, will not pass the inspection. If Granny Rose fails the inspection, Nell will have to accompany her back to Ireland to care for her, and she will never see her father. This book was a detailed account of what a young girl coming to America might have encountered on Ellis Island in the early 1900s. I highly reccomend this excellant addition to the American Diaries series.

Nicky D. from L.I.C.: A Narrative Portrait of Nicholas Detommaso (Portrait Series)
Published in Paperback by Bay Pr (October, 1995)
Authors: Warren Lehrer and Adele Shtern
Average review score:

Funny, delightful read of a real New York character!
Written and designed by Warren Lehrer (not Jim Lehrer) this is a really great read and a great gift. Designed like a 'person' this book reads like a person talking. Really fun. Great insight into some New York history and neighborhood feeling. Warren Lehrer is a unique designer who was able to put a 'personality' on the page with photographs, and typography.

A classic portrait of a fascinating New Yorker
Written by Jim Lehrer, who has an interesting way of presenting 'visual literature' (varying font types and other graphic tools), this book is a riveting look at one quintessential New Yorker. Nicky D. Tommaso has lived in the same apartment across the river from the United Nations for over 65 years, and seen life go by with a keen eye, and a charmed smile. This comes across as a series of vignettes, anecdotes, and stories told as only Nicky D can. With an irreverence that is delightful, and an insight that is at times, profound, we are led by the hand to various little corners of his house, his life and his mind. A great read that may be universal in its appeal mainly because its so utterly honest, and drenched in human suffering and joy. All told with a sense of humor that is the most appealing element of this book. Excellent!

Nimby: An Extraordinary Cloud Who Meets a Remarkable Friend

Author: Jasper Tomkins

Great for children of all ages!
I came across this book over 10 years ago and have been continually looking for it until I found it at Amazon tonight. I haven't read it since then but still I remember the playful artwork and the touching story about being happy with who you are. It's a wonderful book for children of all ages. Too bad that it is out of print. :-(

Fantastic pictures full of color and imagination
"Nimby" was my daughter's first book. We read it until it fell apart and then read it some more after we taped it back together. Finding a friend is a special experience and this book with its vibrant colors and personalities tells such a story. It is simply a great book.

The North South Trail: A Guide for Traveling Across Rhode Island for Hikers, Equestrians, and Mountain Bikers
Published in Paperback by Great Swamp Press (16 April, 2002)
Author: Cliff Vanover
Average review score:

A concise, detailed and well authored trail guide
As a avid hiker and naturalist, I found this guide to be the best and detailed ( it includes interesting historical facts of sites this trail transverses) guide I've ever used. It would useful to the most experience outdoorsmen to the novice hiker. I highly recommend it.

Excellent addition to my trail guide library
"The North South Trail" is a remarkably thorough field guide to this premier path through Rhode Island. The author has expertly manipulated 1:24,0000 US Geological Service maps to create large scale details for 34 trail sections. This handy guide and an orienteering compass are all you really need to navigate the North South Trail.

Trail descriptions for each of the 34 sections comprise most of the text. Chapters on Getting There, and Camping Along The Trail, and an appendix, and index all add the the thoroughness of this excellent guide. I particularly like the photography of rural Rhode Island, and the pronunciation guide for places such as Quonochontaug.

Notes from an Even Smaller Island

Author: Neil Humphreys
Average review score:

Great book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, from the 1st page, I became totally engrossed in it. Neil Humphreys can find humor in anything, a very endearing trait that makes you want to keep reading. Regardless of where you are from, it is hilarious look at the world we live in, you'll find yourself roaring with laughter. When reading the book, it is not essential that you've ever been to Singapore or UK, because the author has a very engaging writing style that crosses all continents and he speaks as a very seasoned traveler, and insightful observationist. Particularly enjoyed the memories of his family, growing up in Dagenham, and his humorous comaparisons of Queen Elizabeth with his own mother. Also found interesting the author's description of the socio-economic and political atmosphere of Singapore, as his objective writing reveals the positives and the downfalls of the many issues that are inherent there. Neil Humphreys is the sort of person you'd like to sit down with and just listen to all the experiences of his travels. Highly recommend this book to all, especially those not familiar with Singaporean life. A+++++++++

Singapore Smash!
This book is highly recommended. It took me only one day to read it as I could not put it down. It is both insightful and hysterical. Anyone that has visited Singapore or Dagenham (the author's home town) will find it even more appealing. However whether you know the places or not, Neil Humphreys's eloquent descriptions of both will make you feel like you do. It certainly makes you feel a little more endeared to both places and their people in a strange way. A laugh on every page - read this smashing book for yourselves.

Oak Island Gold
Published in Paperback by Nimbus Publishing, Ltd. (October, 1993)
Author: William S. Crooker
Average review score:

A logical suggestion to the money pit's content.
Crooker's research travels the reader through time; time spent by individuals who lost their resources and lives in search. He is not defiant of those myths and stories that give possibility to what lies below but is observant to these fables as a tool in which to build and solve the puzzle of "the money pit." Crooker's research into the sacking of Havana during the seven year war indicates a keen and logical approach to the "who," "what," and "when." This is a must read for those with interest in lost treasure and the unfathomable chase of their childhood dreams. Edward J. Palmer, VA, USA

The greatest buried treasure story ever![non-fiction]
William Crooker delves into the ever-deepening mystery surrounding the alleged treasure trove on Oak Island in Nova Scotia. He follows the 200 year history from the discovery of a depression in the ground under a solitary tree to the present devesation and attempted preservation of the most baffling puzzle ever discovered. He adds new insight and debunks some very popular theories about the origins of the "Money Pit." Crooker's native roots lend credibility and authority to his investigation. If you are a fan of mystery and intrigue, this tale of pirates, ghosts, and booby-traps is a MUST READ! The gold foil-embossed cover alone will knock your socks off!

Of Time and an Island (A York State Book)
Published in Paperback by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (May, 1987)
Author: John Keats
Average review score:

The private life of one of our great journalists
This is a dynamic work by an unusual and remarkable man whose contributions in other areas have yet to be fully appreciated. An expert writer and master of literary organization, Keats presents a view of an alternative way of life along the St. Lawrence River. You will enjoy being there as he and his family rise to the challenges of living on an island. By the way, John Keats also wrote an expose on the American automobile, (Insolent Chariots, 1958), an expose on our post secondary educational system (The Sheepskin Psychosis), and the food industry (Whatever Happened to Mom's Apple Pie?). These are a MUST READ even today. Sadly, these are not widely available and out of print.
I believe that he passed away recently, but considering the impact of his work it is surprising he lived as long as he has. I am hopeful history will reveal the magnitude of the contribution that Mr. Keats had made to the well-being of the American consumer.
What he wrote in 1950's and 1960's is perhaps more relevant today than it was at the time he wrote it. You are no doubt familiar with Ralph Nader who addressed issues in the auto industry. You will find the life of this author equally fascinating perhaps more so considering that little seems available about the concluding years of his life (death?). This reader does not understand why this author seems to be obscure and certain works unobtainable.

A great Book!
This is one of those books you just can't put down! An amazing record of the life and poeple of the Thousand Islands from the point of view of an Islander themself. The history included in the book is well researched. The authors discriptions of the Islands and the life living there are the best I've read. The authors island and home are still standing just the way he discribed them in the book. This is definitly a must read for any Thousand Islands fan.

Once upon an Island
Published in Hardcover by Front Street Press (December, 1998)
Authors: Lila Linzer and Joan Luby
Average review score:

Lila Linzer's first book is #1 on my shelf!
this book is great! it takes you right to the carribbean and makes you feel like you're inside of the story watching and learning. it tells 4 stories which enchant me and my family and make us all realize that if you were to change around some of the characters you can put yourself into the story, and your own everyday life. you can teach yourself that mistakes that happen in fiction stories could happen in real life. its a collection of stories that im sure will be passed down through the generations, and always be welcome on anybody's bookshelf.

An extraordinary journey both written, and visual.
An enchanting book that will transport the reader to the Carribean. Four fables where animals work their way through challenges to happy ends. They are brilliantly written in the patois of the islands. They are visually most unusual, and sophisticated. The book is interesting, and keeps you bound in curiosity. Once read... the words are yours. Once seen, the images are also part of you.

I am one the the group of 12 who cooperatively wrote and published this book of south Florida short stories. Living in what some call "paradise" produces a unique life experience which we want to share with those living more traditional lifestyles. You'll enjoy a tropical getaway with each story.
